Aloe vera has long been heralded for its healing properties externally, but you may not be aware that aloe vera can also heal your body from the inside. Aloe vera has many ingredients that neutralize toxins, clean the colon, stimulate cell regeneration, support your immune system and boost energy levels.

Aloe vera is incorporated in many detox diets due to its laxative action, including those meant to rid your body of the effects of heavy metals. You need to use caution when taking aloe juice, however, because it can have many unwanted effects. Always consult a health care professional before undergoing a detox diet — especially if you have a health condition, take medicine or take supplements. Also seek medical help if you have been exposed to heavy metals.

ROLE

Aloe vera juice will clean you out because it is a stimulant laxative, according to the National Centers for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. You may experience abdominal cramps as well as diarrhea when you use aloe juice.

IMPORTANCE

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which used to allow aloe in over-the-counter laxatives, banned this ingredient in such products in 2002. According to the FDA, this ingredient is not generally recognized as safe or is misbranded.

What the issue boils down to, according to NCCAM, is that companies manufacturing laxatives made with aloe as an active ingredient did not provide necessary safety data to the FDA, .

CONCERNS

The experts at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York discourage drinking aloe vera juice as part of a detox or otherwise, due to possible adverse effects. Aside from gastrointestinal upset and lowered potassium levels, aloe can worsen intestinal diseases like ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease.

It can also cause kidney inflammation, according to “The Essential Herb-Drug-Vitamin Interaction Guide,” by George T. Grossberg and Barry Fox. Inappropriate use of aloe supplements also is linked to acute hepatitis and thyroid dysfunction, according to the cancer center.

CAUTION

Drinking aloe to detox may be dangerous if you take certain medications, according to Grossberg and Fox. It raises your risk for blood sugar levels that fall too low when taken with many medicines, including insulin, acarbose and tolbutamide.

It can increase effects of many drugs due to potassium loss, including sotalol, verapamil and lidocaine. Taking it with drugs like azosemide, cortisone, oligomannate or olmestartan and hydrochlorothiazide raises your risk of low blood-potassium levels. Taking aloe with some herbs raises your risk for cardiac glycoside toxicity, which can be fatal. These include motherwort, black hellebore, digitalis and lily-of-the-valley.
